Technology package CONCENTRATES AS LEAST COST EFFECTIVE FEEDING OPTIONS FOR FINISHING BROILERS
Summary Two Broiler Finisher Concentrates have been released on May 5, 2011 to the farming communities to address the rising cost of commercial feeds for broiler chickens. They are Low Energy Concentrate (LEC) to be used with sweet potato and High Energy Concentrate (HEC) to be used with cassava for finishing broilers to maturity. This research was done to reduce costs for farmers who raise broiler chickens. It addresses the rising cost of feeding broilers by smallholder farmers and improves their competitiveness in the broiler market.

Broiler concentrates NARI has formulated two finisher concentrates which when mixed with either cassava or sweet potato can reduce production costs. It can be mixed with either cassava or sweet potato at a ratio of 1:1; i.e. 50% concentrate with 50% either cassava or sweet potato. Because farmers can use cassava or sweet potato from the garden, cost has been reduced by as much as 30%. A trial has demonstrated that mixing garden sweet potato (50%) with the LEC concentrate at 50% can reduce production cost by K300.00.
