Abstract / Content summary Papua New Guinea (PNG), which is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change and food insecurity, aims to provide climate information to 70% of the population to respond to climate extremes and uncertainties by 2030. Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, we evaluate the potential and limitations of seasonal farm advisories (SFAs) that are delivered through Short Messaging Service (SMS) to support farmer adoption of climate-related agricultural practices. The results indicate that SMS-based SFAs are demanded in PNG and are likely to be more effective if they are: tailored to user requirements and geography; co-created in a context-relevant manner; supported by extension; developed through participatory engagement; presented in ways that allow action; and supported by affordable mobile devices and efficient networks that are maintained to translate user intention into adoption. Exploring the facilitating conditions, informed by learning and user feedback, not only shapes practice and policy to maximise adoption, but also has the potential to enable PNG to meet its National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
